There is no better place to spend the most meditative 24 hours imaginable over the annual holiday of Nyepi
Nyepi Silent Day
Once a year, Bali pauses.
Nyepi marks the Balinese New Year. A day when everything stays still, lights dim, and everyday rhythms fall away. After the energy of the Pengerupukan night, the island enters 24 hours of shared stillness: roads empty, skies clear. For 24 hours, the island rests. Nature becomes more present, stars brighter against an unlit sky. Within this shared pause, time feels different. Slower. Spacious.
At the Desa, Nyepi is an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to begin again, quietly, together. To rest from distraction, notice what remains, and share in a rare moment of collective calm, where silence becomes a space for reflection, balance, and renewal.
The Eve of Nyepi: Pengerupukan
In the days leading up to Nyepi, the island builds energy. On the eve of the Day of Silence, neighbourhoods gather for Pengerupukan. Local Banjar communities carry their Ogoh-Ogoh, large effigies representing negative forces, through the streets, accompanied by the rhythm of beleganjur gamelan.
It’s loud, chaotic, joyful. A final release before stillness.
If you’d like to witness the procession, head towards Jalan Petitenget and the nearby village intersections, about a 15–20 minute walk from the Desa. Go early and allow time to return before road closures begin. And then, the next morning, everything stops.
Our Families also create Mini Ogoh-Ogoh, small-scale interpretations crafted entirely from recycled and repurposed materials. Each piece is guided by cultural respect and our closely-held commitment to regenerative design, and is then showcased in the Desa’s Courtyard on the eve of Nyepi. Join us to experience the frenetic energy of Pengerupukan together at Desa Potato Head Bali.
For 24 hours, the island rests.

Curated Programmes
At the Desa, we celebrate this reset with care. Through our curated programme, the day invites quiet rituals and shared reflection, creating space to realign with yourself, with others, and with the natural world.
