“To see how mature and talented people are from my city is quite incredible… Energy attracts energy, it snowballs.”

Our Desa Dialogues series continues as we catch up with the icon of the Melbourne dance underground, DJ JNETT, who stayed with us at the Desa for her appearance at Klymax Discotheque. The revered selector looks back at her decades-long career, hosting the Recovery show on ABC, discusses how the vibrant Melbourne scene has evolved over the years, and the joys of living in the moment.

The fact that I’m still living through it, and seeing this change is just the best.”

Janette Pitruzzello, better known as DJ JNETT, has been a driving force in the Melbourne underground since the movement’s burgeoning years in the early '90s. From a time when vinyl was the only option for DJing — when physically digging for music in record stores was a way of life — to the overwhelming digital access to new and previously rare sounds, she’s witnessed the scene evolve from the front line. The once “side room” house sound that she’s championed throughout her career now fills main rooms, there are more opportunities than ever for female performers, and her hometown has grown into a global focal point for cutting-edge music and culture.

“It’s one thing to be talented, it’s another thing to be able to take it to that next level.”

In the video, Janette talks about the challenges facing up-and-coming artists in a saturated musical landscape, balancing motherhood with the demands of life as a DJ, and how essential finding and pushing her own, sincere sound has been throughout her journey.
