Fantastic Planet
Directed by René Laloux Released in 1973
An extraordinary French-Czech animated allegory, Fantastic Planet transports audiences to Ygam, a world ruled by towering blue Draags where humans (Oms) are treated as pets or pests. Through surreal cut-out animation and a hypnotic jazz-inflected score, the film becomes a parable of oppression and resistance. As the Oms fight for survival and self-determination, Laloux and illustrator Roland Topor craft a dreamlike meditation on freedom, domination, and the fragile balance between cultures. Both psychedelic and political, it remains a landmark in animation and speculative cinema.
